William Anderson Coffin was a landscape and figure painter.
Life:
Coffin studied at Yale University and in Paris from 1877-82 with Léon Bonnat. Soon afterwards he returned to New York where he set up a studio and became a regular exhibitor with the amongst others, the Society of American Artists. He also continued to exhibit at the Paris Salons. Examples of his work are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the National Gallery, Washington DC. Coffin was also an art critic and administrator. He was a regular contributor to the New York Evening Post and The Nation (1886-91) and The Sun (1896-1900). In 1901 he was director of the Buffalo Fine Art Exposition.
